Merloni, an Italian manufacturer of LPG storage cylinders, has built a long‑standing partnership with KANSAI HELIOS that extends far beyond supplying powder coatings. As Merloni continued innovating its fully automated production of above‑ and below‑ground gas tanks, the company needed a new coating system capable of withstanding harsh outdoor conditions, UV exposure, physical wear, and long‑term underground corrosion.
Merloni required a coating exceeding 500 microns in a single layer to improve protection and production efficiency. Our powder coating expert team developed a high‑performance epoxy‑polyester powder system that surpassed expectations: the epoxy version could be applied in one layer up to 700 microns without detachment, ideal for underground tanks. For above‑ground tanks, a polyester version of the same glossy green color was created to ensure UV stability, gloss retention, and weather resistance.
To further enhance durability, a glossy clearcoat was added as part of a powder‑on‑powder two‑layer system, enabling both layers to cure in a single oven cycle, reducing energy use and supporting sustainable production.
The collaboration also included equipment optimization, the implementation of a tailored application technology and production layouts, ensuring consistent, high‑quality coating results. This integrated approach – combining advanced materials, technical expertise, and optimized equipment – set new standards for performance, efficiency, and sustainability in tank manufacturing.
