Corrosion protection for Austria’s largest bridge refurbishment project
The renovation of Vienna’s historic “Ostbahnbrücke” marks a milestone in Austria’s infrastructure preservation. As the country’s largest bridge refurbishment project, it highlights the growing importance of environmental responsibility and long‑term value protection. Companies like KANSAI HELIOS play a key role by developing low‑solvent coating systems based on biogenic raw materials.
Since March 2024, the bridge has been undergoing a complete modernization, including the replacement and reinforcement of steel components and the full renewal of its corrosion protection. More than 57,000 m² of steel surface are being treated to ensure the structure remains safe and functional for the next four decades. Throughout the works, train traffic continues uninterrupted – a logistical achievement requiring exceptional coordination.
After more than a century of constant use, comprehensive refurbishment became essential to secure its structural integrity for future generations. Corrosion protection plays a decisive role in this effort. High‑performance coating systems from KANSAI HELIOS Austria, compliant with EN ISO 12944, safeguard steel structures against harsh environmental influences, reduce maintenance needs, and support sustainable resource use.
